Life is just one thing after another. The “things” cover a range from really good to really bad, and there's not a great deal you can do about most of them beforehand.
For many bad things and problems, what seems the best solution at the time just makes more problems.
Finding out and understanding how things work is a very important and fulfilling thing in life (at least, it is for me!). The trouble is, when it comes to the world at large (beyond man-made things), the more you understand, the more you realise that there is that you don't really understand.
Science is good. It seems to be by far the most reliable way (you might even say, the only reliable way) to find out how the world works. It keeps you on your toes, because things are changing all the time, with new items of information being discovered, and new ways of interpreting them being suggested – some of which (both items and ideas) later turn out to be wrong!
However, there are some problems with which science doesn't really help much, at least so far.
